BEAUTY TIPS FROM OUR ELDERS

Young dancer at our farewell party (March 2010)
Balinese ceremonies seem to require full-on makeup

The other day we were talking about beauty advice we had received from our elders and how their words unwittingly took root in our consciousness, so that decades afterward we still remembered and, in some cases, even obeyed them.  Here are some.

“No woman over thirty should ever leave the house without lipstick on.”

"Check your elbows before going out. They should be soft and smooth, not rough and dry."

"Never wear orange lipstick."
"Take that frown off your face.Beauty wears a smile."

“Stay out of the sun and never, ever go to bed with your makeup on or ‘you’ll wake up like an unhappy clown’”

"Brush your hair 100 times before going to bed."

"Take care of your hands. Wear gloves when washing dishes and always use moisturizer."

"Always wash your face and brush your teeth and get enough sleep."

What tips, advice and admonishments do you remember?

  1. Absolutely zero from elders. My mother's quick routine was rooted in WW2 and stayed there: painted on eyebrows (dark) and dark red lips (no liner). All my info. came from watching girlfriends sneak it on in various school bathrooms. Also from looking at magazines when I was a teen.

My daughter & I exchange tips from time to time, but she's not big on makeup now, having been a model and actress in her own teens. I taught her to use moisturizer, always in an upward anti-gravity flow. And to keep her teeth clean. And to take all the paint off thoroughly!

As for me, I'm all about eyes. Love to do them full 'slap' as they say in the UK.: liner, mascara, colors. Yup. It's just another canvas, albeit a more wrinkled one as time goes on.
Best eye make-up remover, and used since my teens, baby-oil! I really think it has helped over the years. That's the best tip I can hand down to anyone interested. Use with a tissue for simple make-up removal.
